The Combination for Change
What do you do when your authority seems to be making a mistake? You can whine or revolt, but you will probably not bring positive change.
The best way to encourage a change in direction is with an appeal. It might not always prompt change, but it will allow you to determine your course of action in a matter. The steps below will maximize the effectiveness of your appeal.
- Be in right standing—Be supportive of past positions, policies, and projects.
- Have the right motives—Make your request out of genuine concern for others, not a desire for personal benefit.
- Choose the appropriate time—Present your appeal at a time when the person is free to concentrate on your request.
- Gather accurate information—Research and share all the facts.
- Demonstrate the right attitudes—Exhibit loyalty, honor, and creativity.
- Use the appropriate words—Think through your appeal prior to giving it.
- Give the right response—Indicate a readiness to accept the resulting decision.
