Develop Every Facet of Your Character

Develop Every Facet of Your Character

Organizations tend to focus on achievement, sales, and the bottom line because these goals seem most directly related to organizational success. This can make abstract character qualities such as sensitivity, hospitality, and gentleness seem unimportant or unnecessary. However, a closer look reveals that character qualities are like the facets of a diamond, each contributing to the brilliance of the whole.

For example, if you believe gentleness is for weaklings, then you may respond harshly to others in daily situations. If you view contentment as irrelevant, your happiness will depend on external circumstances and possessions instead of what really matters in life. If sensitivity is not important to you, others may view you as conceited, condescending, or indifferent toward their goals and
feelings.

Read over the list below and mark the box next to each character quality you see demonstrated in your life. Then, circle the boxes next to the traits you see lacking in your life. As you read the list, you will probably come to realize that every character quality is vital for your success—to lack one of them is to lack an important aspect of your life.

salesmanSeek opportunities to reinforce your strengths and overcome your weaknesses. Do not excuse obvious flaws in some areas of your character (such as generosity and punctuality) just because you are strong in other areas (like flexibility and availability). Make it your goal to practice each of the forty-nine character qualities every day. By doing so, you can lay the foundation for good decisions, proper behavior, and healthy relationships.
