Not Just Competency

Skills are important. Competency is vital. But most employers value personal character over things that can be taught about a job.

If you and a coworker with similar skills and abilities were considered for a promotion, what other variables would your supervisor consider? Do you consistently arrive for work on time? Do you work on personal projects during company time? Do you work hard to make the organization successful, or are you just there for what you can get? How do you respond when faced with challenges or difficulties? How would your coworkers describe your character?
